Label TextThese moccasins are classic examples of the extremely fine porcupine quillwork that Haudenosaunee women made in the early 19th century. A hallmark of this tradition is the vividly dyed quillwork that covers much of the moccasins’ surface in a combination of geometric and gentle curvilinear designs. Women often bordered the cuffs with a richly colored silk ribbon to complement the dyed quillwork.ProvenanceDr. Harlow Brooks (33), New York City; Brooklyn Museum of Art (43.87.76a,b); Wellington collection (M3), Long Island, New York
