Label TextCloth hoods with richly beaded floral imagery are a hallmark of James Bay Cree women’s artistry. The earliest hoods were likely made of hide and detailed with quillwork and painted designs. Fine European trade cloth quickly replaced hide, and glass beads became the main mode of decoration. In the 1800s, floral beaded designs, influenced by European chintz, lace, and illustrated ladies’ magazines, appeared on many hoods. The elaborate design on the center of this three-part composition is emphasized by white beads which highlight the flowers and serpentine stem.ProvenanceWellington collection (15/21), Long Island, New York; Walter Banko, Montreal, Quebec
