Label TextThis jar is approximately 1000 years old, but the coiling technique that was used to make it is still practiced by Southwest potters. Coiling is worked by the artist’s hands alone, building up the successive coil of clay that form the pot. The Hohokam may have used jars such as this one for food storage or ceremonial purposes. It has a distinctive shape with an extremely low shoulder, or slope, from the opening to the widest part of the jar. This style of jar was made between A.D. 900 to 1100.
