Label TextThe distinctive "mushroom" shape of this large storage jar resembles an earlier Ako Polychrome. (c.f. Dillingham 1992, fig.2.1, Batkin 1987, p.154) The peculiar shape results from the use of a deep "puki", a dish form used to hold and shape the base of the pot. After the puki has served its function, the sides of the vessel may be expanded. Acomita Polychrome was made in various shapes between 1770 and 1880. Typical are the flowing geometric decorations seen on this example, as are the triangles decorating the neck, and the red-slipped underbody. While Harlow (1990) has categorized these characteristics as Acomita Polychrome and Dillingham (1992) concurs, Batkin (1987) sees no justification for recognizing it as a distinct type.
