Label TextThe wand is composed of slightly flattened wood staff with two carved and painted wood figures of insects, most likely moths, attached by fiber cords that pass through holes drilled in the wings. The moths have been painted with thin lavender and saffron color, which is also applied to the staff and to the wooden disk at the top. Butterflies and moths are generally symbols of fertility in the Pueblos, and they are painted on pottery and embroidered on ceremonial mantas and sashes.
