Label TextThis early polychrome jar type of Zuni pottery, with its distinctive shape and complex designs, was important between 1700 and 1760. The high underbody, the bulge at the middle, and the sloping upper section, with no real neck, is an old form that was replaced about 1750 by globular jars with sloping necks. (c.f. Frank and Harlow 1974, fig.141 & pl.XXVI; Batkin 1987, p.168). Feathers and hooks were common design motifs, but they are lacking on this specimen. The underbody is polished red and the rim-edge is also red, a trait that ended about 1750. Immediately inside the rim is an angular flange.
