Label Text In this painting One Bull provides his personal account of what took place at the Battle of Little Bighorn, June 24th, 1876. In the center are five circles that represent the five camps and tribal affiliations of the Native people that participated in the conflict. One Bull illustrates his role in the battle—he and a rescued comrade ride double on his horse while he carries the shield that he borrowed from Sitting Bull. The line of warriors across the bottom shows that the fighting shifted toward the ridge where “Custer’s Last Stand” took place. Chief One Bull created several versions of this epic day during his long life.
