Label TextMaria Martinez formed clay into vessels and her husband Julian painted designs on some of her finished pots. The combination of Maria’s expertly formed and burnished vessels and Julian’s elegant designs brought the couple great acclaim. Their success inspired other potters and was a strong influence in the revival of pottery traditions in the pueblos. Around 1925 Maria gave this polychrome jar to Dr. Lane, director of the Indian Hospital of the Santa Fe Indian School, for help extended to her family.Exhibition History"Art Des Indiens D'Amerique Du Nord Dans La Collection D'Eugene Thaw," Mona Bismarck Foundation, Paris, France, Somogy Editions D'Art, January 21, 2000 - March 18, 2000.
