Label TextThe Log Cabin patch, made of strips of fabric surrounding a center square, was one of the most popular of the late nineteenth century, and continues to be beloved today. It may have been originally inspired by the Log Cabin Campaign of William Henry Harrison in the 1840s, but did not rise to prominence until the Civil War, when Log Cabin quilts were frequently made for fundraisers. Part of its popularity no doubt has come from the opportunities the form presents for interesting color patterning: nearly all Log Cabin variations rely on each block being made from two different fabrics in colors that repeat through the whole quilt. It is also more easily made than other blocks, with the pieces sewn down to an invisible substrate.
