Label TextThe fan, or “Grandmother’s Fan,” quilt pattern seems to have first appeared in the 1880s, possibly as a more regimented expression of the same aesthetic sense that produced crazy quilts around the same time. Like crazy quilts, the original fan quilts were made mostly of silk taffeta, satin, and velvet in bright and dark colors, often embellished with silk embroidery. In the 1930s, women began to make them out of cotton prints like other quilt blocks, and to project it back in time as a “quaint” colonial pattern.
